2010 AmeriCorps PositionsThe Sierra Nevada Alliance is currently accepting applications for their 2010 Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership. This program places 27 AmeirCorps members at different conservation agencies and organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada to conduct watershed restoration and monitoring, watershed education, and volunteer recruitment and support. In 2010, the Tahoe-Baikal Institute and the California Tahoe Conservancy will jointly host two of these AmeriCorps members. Each position will have a differnt focus, but both members will have the opportuntiy to work with both of the hosting organizations and to work together on several collaborative projects. Environmental Education Programs AssistantThis position is a part of a partnership between the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Tahoe Baikal Institute, and the position will allow the AmeriCorps member the opportunity to work with both organizations. The Environmental Education Programs Assistant will be an integral part of the TBI staff, giving him or her exposure to all aspects of the operations of a small non-profit organization. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting TBI’s US Programs Coordinator in all tasks related to the planning, execution, and post-program wrap-up of TBI's 2010 SEE program. In addition he/she will help with outreach and public relations, including efforts to strengthen TBI’s alumni network. He/She will also act as the caretaker for Fredericks’ Site, a rustic residence on Fallen Leaf Lake, utilized by TBI as its base of operations for the SEE program, as well as other complementary environmental education activities. There is a possibility for on-site lodging at Fredericks’ for part of the year (May-October). In addition to working on educational programming through TBI, the Educational Programs Assistant will collaborate with a second AmeriCorps member at the same site (Natural Resources Technician) on a number of ecological restoration and monitoring projects with the CTC, as well as to design interpretive materials focused on the recently created Tahoe Water Trail. Specific tasks will include: coordinating all day-to-day logistics for the five weeks of the Tahoe portion of the SEE program, recruiting volunteer presenters and other volunteers to support the exchange program, surveying stream cross-sections and longitudinal profiles, mapping user created trails and other features on state lands using GPS and GIS software, collecting and propagating native vegetation, collecting and organizing data from ground water monitoring wells, leading TBI participants in watershed restoration and monitoring, collecting and managing photo monitoring data, working with Conservancy field crews to implement small-scale restoration projects, working with a local volunteers to increase the awareness of non-motorized boaters on Lake Tahoe, and a variety of other duties necessary to achieve Conservancy and TBI goals. Natural Resources TechnicianThis position is a part of a partnership between the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Tahoe Baikal Institute, and the position will allow the AmeriCorps member the opportunity to work with both organizations. The Natural Resources Technician will be responsible for some technical aspects of watershed assessment and restoration. The position is also responsible for improving the collaboration of Conservancy and TBI programs, and providing accurate environmental information to a variety of audiences. The Natural Resources Technician will be given discretion to lead monitoring and assessment projects under general direction of technical experts. Therefore the incumbent must be able to work independently, take initiative, and solve problems. The position will offer a variety experiences associated with the monitoring, planning, and implementation of wildlife habitat enhancement and watershed restoration projects. Specific tasks will include: surveying stream cross-sections and longitudinal profiles, mapping user created trails and other features on state lands using GPS and GIS software, collecting and propagating native vegetation, collecting and organizing data from ground water monitoring wells, leading TBI participants in watershed restoration and monitoring, assisting with the review of restoration plans and/or CEQA documents, collecting and managing photo monitoring data, working with Conservancy field crews to implement small-scale restoration projects, working with a local volunteer group to increase the awareness of non-motorized boaters on Lake Tahoe, helping to plan the TBI summer Environmental Exchange program, and a variety of other duties necessary to achieve Conservancy and TBI goals.
